For centuries, Chinese medicine practitioners have helped couples who have had difficulty conceiving a child. This may be due to either male or female infertility. Because the gestation and birth take place in the female body, women’s bodies are highly complex, both hormonally and structurally, and when something is out of balance, this can make conception very difficult.
Infertility affects approximately 15% of couples in Western societies. Female infertility is defined as the inability to become pregnant after one year of trying, when the woman has a normal sex life and her partner has normal reproductive function. There are many possible causes for female infertility, including ovulation disorders, damage to the fallopian tubes, endometriosis, uterine or cervical causes, or unexplained causes. Some risk factors include age, smoking, being overweight, history of STD’s, and heavy alcohol use.
Age is the single most important factor affecting female fertility. More women are now choosing to conceive later in life. The average age of first conception in 1970 was 21.4, and in 2013, it was up to 26 years, and increasing all the time. Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have. As a woman ages, her eggs age too, diminishing in quantity and quality.
These days, medical doctors are often referring their patients for Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments if IVF (in-vitro fertilization) has failed, because they recognize how very effective it is. Clinical studies conducted in China indicate that about 70% of all cases of infertility (male and female) treated by Chinese herbs resulted in pregnancy or restored fertility. Since female infertility is quite complicated, some women may take 2 to 3 months to become pregnant; others may take 4 to 6 months, or even longer. It is perfectly fine to try to become pregnant while you are taking the herbal medicine – it is very safe and gentle, and will not harm the fetus, should fertilization occur.
Some of the effects of herbal medicine on fertility include the following:
- Balance the hormones;
- Increase blood supply to the uterus and building up the uterine lining;
- Help implantation and reduce the risk of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy;
- Release the stress of infertility and its related treatments;
- Increase the success rates of IVF and IUI.
In the Chinese medical perspective, a constitutional weakness in Kidney essence is an important cause of female infertility. For fertilization to occur, the Yin and Yang aspects of your Kidney essence need to be perfectly balanced. To this end, Chinese herbal medicine focuses on tonifying Kidney essence, nourishing the blood to warm the uterus, and balancing hormones (Kidney Yin and Yang) in order to increase the chances of successful conception.
