Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic, itchy skin condition associated with genetic factors and is also known as hereditary allergic dermatitis. It is very common in children but may occur at any age. This often runs in families with allergies such as hay fever and asthma, sensitive skin, or a history of atopic dermatitis.

In atopic dermatitis, the hypersensitivity or allergic reaction that occurs in the skin causes chronic inflammation. The inflammation leads to dry, scaly and sensitive skin. There may also be rashes and blisters that itch quite intensely.

In general, atopic dermatitis will come and go, often based on external factors. Although its cause is unknown, the condition appears to be an abnormal response of the body’s immune system.

Atopic dermatitis is very common in all parts of the world. It affects about 10% of infants and 3% of the total population in the United States.
