People who are overweight or obese are at a higher risk for such diseases as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. The struggle to lose weight is an ongoing problem for many people. There are many simple things you can do to help in your quest to achieve a healthy weight.

Exercise is an important factor in weight loss. The more you move your body, the higher your metabolism will become. In Chinese medicine, exercise will increase the circulation of Qi (vital energy) and Blood. The important thing is to find an exercise that you enjoy, so you can stick with it.
What and how you eat is even more important than exercise. There are many diets out there, so it is very difficult to know which one is right for you. More importantly than following any particular diet, is to eat a well-balanced, whole-food diet:
o Eat foods in their most natural state, and avoid processed foods as much as possible, which have many ingredients hidden in them, such as high fat or salt content, and harmful chemicals
o Choose organic foods whenever possible. Added chemicals and hormones in food can affect your endocrine system, which can undermine weight loss
o Drink plenty of water, filtered or purified if possible. Water mobilizes fat within your body. Water makes all of your body’s systems function more efficiently, and thus speeds up detoxification and metabolism.
o Avoid sugar as much as possible, including fruit juice. Although fruit is natural, fruit juice contains a high amount of sugar. In the body, all sugar is processed the same way, natural or not. It is best to eat a whole piece of fruit, so you also get the beneficial fiber. In Chinese medicine, the Spleen organ system is related to digestion. If the Spleen is weak, there will be excess dampness in the body, which includes excess fat. Sugar will weaken the Spleen, which can lead to weight gain.
Eat mindfully. Often, we eat while we are doing something else, such as watching TV, driving, or working. We are not even paying attention to the taste of the food. It is easy to lose track of how hungry or full you are, and this can lead to overeating. When you eat, pay attention to how the food tastes, and how you feel when you are eating, and whether or not your are enjoying the food. Emotions are also a huge component to overeating. When we eat mindfully, emotional triggers such as depression, anger, or loneliness will be less likely to trigger our unhealthy eating patterns.
