As people age, it is common to develop some sort of discoloration of the skin – usually spots or patches of dark discoloration. Two of the most common types of too much pigment (hyperpigmentation) are melasma and age spots.
Melasma is caused by an imbalance of hormones in combination with sun exposure and genetic susceptibility. Melasma is characterized by tan or dark irregular skin discolorations of the sun-exposed areas of the face, with spots or patches of dark color. It often develops during pregnancy, and is usually found in women, although it can also occur in men. Melasma can be influenced by either normal or abnormal levels of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Internal influences include abnormal hormone levels of pregnancy. External influences include fertility drugs, oral contraceptives, or hormone replacement therapy. Foods rich in phytoestrogens, such as soybeans, soy milk, and soybean oil, can also influence melasma development, and therefore should be avoided.
Age spots, also commonly known as liver spots, appear in older adults, people with fair skin, and those who spend a lot of time in the sun. They commonly form in sun-exposed areas of the face and hands. Although age spots are generally harmless, there is a small potential that they can develop into skin cancer. Be sure to have your doctor check them regularly, especially if they have an irregular shape or are very large.
At Merry Clinic, we treat melasma and age spots from both the inside of the body and on the skin surface. Along with Merry Clinic’s Melasma RF herbal capsules, which balances the hormones and increases blood circulation to the skin, our Dermova Skin Brightening Cream works to effectively lighten dark spots. The main ingredient of the cream is a Chinese herb known as ku shen, or Sophora root. Ku shen works by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme found in the skin which is involved in the production of melanin, or skin pigment. Ku shen is able to slow down the melanin production, thereby lightening the skin. Another main ingredient is kiwi fruit water, which also demonstrates anti-tyrosinase activity.
Together, ku shen and kiwi fruit water will gradually cause your skin to become lighter and brighter in color. Dermova Skin Brightening Cream also contains ingredients that moisturize the skin and remove dead skin cells, revealing smoother, softer skin.
Our Skin Detox and Anti-Aging formulas can also be very helpful for melasma and age spots when used along with the Melasma RF capsules and Dermova Brightening cream. When you detoxify the skin, it makes it much easier for the body to clear up the skin discolorations. And since these problems often occur as one ages, the Anti-Aging formula will combat what are known as free radicals. Free radical damage is one of the primary causes of aging and age-related diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. It can also attack collagen molecules in the skin. When the collagen becomes damaged, the skin becomes discolored, starts to sag, and loses elasticity. Our Anti-Aging formula minimizes and counteracts the damaging effects of free radicals.
Please note: With melasma and age spots, it is very important to wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 50 when outdoors. Reapply every 2 hours, and wear a hat if possible.
Recommended usage of Dermova Skin Brightening Cream: Apply on clean face day and night as a moisturizer.
